It is recommended to use deep groove + carbide teeth and strengthen the tungsten carbide surfacing in key areas, which can not only discharge large pieces of gravel but also resist wear.
Your selection should be based on your rig’s maximum pullback force, with an added safety factor. Common ratings include 20k, 30k, 40k, 50k, and 100k lbs. As a general rule, select a swivel rated for at least 1.5 times your expected maximum pullback force to account for shock loads and unexpected resistance. We also consider the bore length and formation type when making recommendations.
Fluted Reamers are the ideal choice for a combination of high-efficiency cuttings removal and cost-effectiveness in soft to medium-hard formations, especially those containing some rock or cobble. They excel in formations where cuttings evacuation is the primary challenge. PDC reamers offer superior performance in harder, more homogeneous rock formations but at a higher cost and with greater susceptibility to impact damage. Roller cone reamers are typically used in the hardest rock formations but have limitations in cuttings evacuation and are subject to more frequent bearing failures.
